Michi-chan Derby Love Tour!
Hey Arizona! Living the derby lifestyle is so great out here because we have a lot of cool events go to to. As long as AZDD and AZRD stay on these seasons, the Valley is blessed with year-round derby! Here are some of the places where we will be seen. Hopefully you will be seen there too:
Saturday February 16 & Sunday February 17- Arizona Derby Love Weekend- First on Saturday at 11AM in Phoenix will be a fundraiser bout where we will see the Arizona Bruisers take on Duke City Derby. Then, we will get ready to go to Tucson to enjoy the annual rivalry of interleague action as the Tucson Roller Derby Saddletramps take on the Texas Roller Girls (Austin, TX) Texecutioners. Bout will be at Bladeworld at 7PM. Then on Sunday, we are back at Bladeworld at 2PM for a Co-Ed scrimmage then it's the championship bout of the Tucson Derby Brats. That bout will be at 4:30PM (Doors open at 4PM).
Saturday March 1 - The season opener for Tucson Roller Derby. On that night, the Copper Queens take on the Iron Curtain and the Vice Squad take on my Furious Truckstop Waitresses (FTW). That will be at Bladeworld in Tucson. On the same night in PHX, Arizona Derby Dames will have their first regulation bout doubleheader between the School Yard Scrappers and the Bombshells and then a rematch of last year's championship bout where the Coffin Draggers (sans Thrash & Martini) will have another chance against the undefeated Brutal Beauties. This bout will be at Castle Sports Club.
Saturday March 15 - Back to Tucson for another dose of TRD action as the Copper Queens take on the Furious Truckstop Waitresses and then Vice Squad takes on the Iron Curtain. 7PM at Bladeworld.
Saturday March 29 - Arizona Roller Derby action as the AZRD Bruisers take on the Surly Gurlies. By this time, we are hoping that the new AZRD Bruiser roster will be in order. 7PM at Casey At The Bat. On the same night, Arizona Derby Dames has a doubleheader bout which includes the premiere full bout for Ann Thrash's Runaway Brides who will be playing the Bombshells. Then, we will see the Coffin Draggers play the School Yard Scrappers. AZDD's bout starts at 8PM at Castle Sports Club.
Being a "zonie"
Yeah, I am a zonie (someone from Arizona). I lived in the Valley in 1980 and 1981 plus I have lived here in Tempe since 1995. Therefore, I can remember things like Wallace & Ladmo, Legend City, Sonoita Motors, Lou Grubb's boring radio commercials, KTAR playing Dodger games, Bill Andres and John Geise on KDKB mornings, CBS on ch. 10, ABC on ch. 3, ON-TV on ch. 15, The Arizona Wranglers, Western Savings, U-TOTEM stores, Circle-K before the bankruptcy (and those beautiful neon signs), Jonathan Brandmeier (I still have a 45 of "The Snowbird Song" which I bought at Tower Plaza for $1.04 back around 1981) , Jerry Foster on Channel 12 (long before the pot-bag scandal), Sky Harbor Terminal 1, no Sunday bus service, Tico, Dewey Hopper and when I-10 West did not come into Phoenix. Honestly, I would rather be living somewhere else (such as So. Cal., Las Vegas or even Tucson), but I am stuck here in the PHX area. Oh well, let's make the best of it.
