It's that time again, ladies! Chill your glasses, don your frocks, and get ready to gather. It's no Pink-A-Rama - just our monthly get together. But these are fun too.
The holidays are closing in fast. So we want to get together before we are neck-deep in madness. Let's do it Sunday, November 18th at our new favorite haunt, the Ruby Room. They are kind enough to open the doors early for us, at 2pm. We love those guys! The theme, or course, is Thanksgiving. We don't have a womanly-bent on the subject this time. Rather, we thought it would be fun if we just chatted about our family's and friends' holiday shenanigans. Plus, it would be a cool way to get to know one another a little better. What about the time the dog stole the turkey? Or when your Uncle Charlie passed out in the mashed potatoes? Do you have a quirky tradition you do every year? Tell us about it! If you have pictures, bring 'em. It doesn't necessarily have to be about Thanksgiving either. Any family gathering will do. We also have some tasty cocktails to sample. We're bending the rules a little bit (hey, isn't that what they're for?), and serving two classics, and one "new classic" - all inspired by those Fall feasts. You don't have to be a member to come to this meet. You just have to crave good conversation and classic cocktails. Please send us a quick note, telling us that you plan on attending, and we will save you a seat. Simply email lupecphx@yahoo.com. If you have an questions, please feel free to email too, or post here. Cheers! Chill your glasses, don your frocks, and get ready to gather with the LUPEC Ladies! The holidays are closing in fast. The boobs need your support - won't you lend a hand? Also, you get to meet the ladies of LUPEC. Look forward to meeting everyone tomorrow night! Who doesn't love to have a drink for charity? Three special edition vintage drinks, made as they were back in the day, will be deftly created by the wonderful Ruby Room mixologists. Those drinks are the Pink Lady, the Cosmopolitan, and as our designated driver special – the Shirley Temple. A dollar from each vintage drink will be donated to the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. A DJ will be playing some fun lounge and retro tunes to keep up the mood. Rummage through your closet and don those pink tees, hot pants, feather boas, or whatever else you can find. In addition, amp.az will be out there with a video camera to capture our inaugural event. Pretty cool huh? Time to mark those calendars and tell your friends to save the date! Make it a girls night out, a romantic evening, or just a brief swing-by to check out the festivities!
Two stories for you today - Both begin with hardship but one ends with redemption while the other ends as one of the greatest criminal cases in our nation's history - and possibly one of it's greatest injustices. On this day, back in 1974, Betty Ford (Known for her husband, the President, and for her lovely center) had a radical mastectomy, and later became active in educating about breast cancer. How interesting then that this month we get both notification that too many drinks per day may lead to cancer (though another study the same day said 2 were just dandy - mental note girls...sip, don't chug) and in 2 weeks is the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure. Is it a coincidence that it all goes back to Betty? Hmmmm.... Next - on this day in 1915 Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg was born. (See picture) As one of four children living with their parents in an unheated NY tenement building, life was a constant struggle. She grew to be a smart girl, graduating high school at just 15. She worked for 4 years at a shipping company but was fired after organizing a strike of 150 workers. She married in the summer of 1939 shortly becoming a stay at home mom. When the children were still young, her brother, who was being investigated by the FBI for espionage and admitted to stealing secrets for the Soviets, pointed to Ethel's husband Julius as being a part of the spy ring. Julius claimed innocence, so Ethel was arrested as well, August 11, 1950, in hopes of making Julius talk. They were offered a deal that if they told of others in the ring, Ethel would be released and Julius would only serve a few years - but they refused, swearing their innocence. They were brought to trial - with the only evidence of their guilt coming from her brother and his wife who admitted to actively participating in delivering nuclear secrets. Ethel's great offense was that she supposedly typed up notes from their meetings. April 5, 1951 Ethel and her husband were convicted of espionage - and sentenced to death. After being on death row at Sing Sing for 26 months, Ethel and Julius, still claiming their innocence, were both executed on their 14th wedding anniversary - becoming the only Americans ever executed for spying. Ethel's story is amazing. If you're interested in learning more about Ethel & Julius, the shock of the nation at their deaths, and even comments from one of their grown sons I suggest this resource (http://www.spartacus.school...) as one of the better 1 stop sites. LUPEC suggests that everyone find something that gets them excited, passionate and all riled up this weekend!
LUPEC's next meeting is open for new members. Come join the fun! That's right - our next meeting is right around the corner! It's this Sunday, the 16th 4:30pm at Amsterdam. Gatorade We are always on the look out for a cool old-school bartender. You know, the ones who make drinks from scratch - no mix, they know the right garnishes to put on the side of your drink and while they might be willing to serve you a Chocolate Chip Cookie Martini - they know it isn't a "real" Martini - it's a mixed drink in a Martini glass. We alternate between meeting at people's homes and meeting up at a place with a full bar. We drink old-school drinks - original recipes from the height of the cocktail era. But we've had more trouble that you might expect in finding folks who are both willing to make them and have the ingredients available. And then, in addition to enjoying an "endangered cocktail" here and there, we also talk about women in history, the history of Phoenix and important issues of the day. So we like to meet in a cool places - preferably some place with a historic feeling to the place that is going to allow us to actually hold a conversation. If we had to pick though - the bartender is FAR more important! Some shining but different examples - Durants (amazing atmosphere, real history, great drinks) and Amsterdam (While new, it has that old feel - and it's in a great spot downtown to see both the old and the new parts of Phoenix). Did you know the 1st Suicide in Phoenix was a woman who threw herself from atop the San Carlos hotel? And of course it was all about a guy. They say her spirit still hants the place wearing her white evening gown. Spooky huh? And she's not the only ghost on the premesis. Our last LUPEC meeting centered around the historic San Carlos hotel in Downtown Phoenix. And there were some really great things to learn too! I was shocked to learn that all the water in the building actually comes from a spring directly below the building. And over 400 years before this hotel was created, that spring is where the Hohokam would come to worship their God of Knowledge and Learning. Coincidentally, it is also where the first school was created in Phoenix. To much cool stuff to list here, but you can read more about it at our full blog - http://lupecphoenix.wordpre... Cocktails + Lovely ladies + Astronauts = Tang based cocktails and a grand old time! The last LUPEC meeting was great. Lots of great stuff to learn. For example - did you know that the first woman in space was a Russian named Valentina Tereshkova. She went up on June 16th 1963. And the next woman in space? Another Russian in 1982! The US didn't send a woman into space until almost exactly 20 years later! June of 1983! Guess that space race didn't include women.... Thought I'd share 2 of our favorite new drink recipes with you. (One with, and one without the Tang...) Cosmonaut 2 parts Tang® powdered soft drink Mix really well and serve. Space Odyssey 1 shot Bacardi® 151 rum Fill glass with ice and add shots of Bacardi and Enjoy! Oh, the revolution is coming! We LUPEC sisters met for the first time last night to decide who we are, where its all going, and how to plan our attack on boring parties and stuck up society as we know it. We've decided that our first "official" meeting/event (Because no meeting of these sisters will ever be less than an event) will be on May 4th. The theme of the meeting is "Below the Border Babes" where we will focus on vintage drinks and vintage chicas from below our border who have both added so much to where we are as a society. More details will come shortly. All women are welcome to attend. Anyone interested in joining LUPEC at this first "official" meeting will make up our group of charter members. Photos will be taken, fun will be had. And along the way you just may learn a thing or two about both classic cocktails, and some amazing, outrageous, dangerous, and terrificly classic broads. Viva la Revolution!
